This may all ready exist but I want a level I can set on the top of a shelve. Then when I am leveling the shelve I want it to tell me how off I am via audio tones.

Sometimes I dont have the ability to look at the level visually based on the fact that I am using my head to level the item or some other blocker. Sometimes I cant see it because the level need to be up very high.

Anyway, its another idea that I will never get to.

I am thinking that given time of day, day of week, beats per minute, speed that I am traveling, my location, and my historical music listening preferences ( what I skip and not skip music wise ) I should be able to build a smarter shuffle for my music player.

If I am traveling at a running speed and bouncing around assume I am jogging. Then remember what I skip and dont skip. Then based on DAY, TIME and the assumption I am running play what I typically like to hear to get pumped up to run.

If I am not moving a lot and sitting at work play music that helps me focus.

Over time sugest items to delete because I skip them all the time. Help me keep my library space to a minimum.

I would like to have make my cell phone change its behavior based on where it is and whats going on.

For example I go home I want it to know I am home and have it change my ring tones accordingly, go to voice mail after 5 o’clock with no rings, connect to my WIFI, send calls from girlfriends to voicemail, etc

If I am driving on the way to work or on a known route I want it to turn on WIFI hotspot and listen for voice commands. It should also turn off the WIFI so it conserves power.

If I am riding on a bike trail I want it to switch off completely.

The emotional ups and downs of moving are a fun ride.

I think durring the day I even used the bandaid analogy. Just do it, it will be fine once we are there.

I feel very lucky to be given the opportunity to move up there. I have been wanting to move out of the US for a few years now. Over the years I have become more and more frustrated with the policys and culture here in the US.

The rest of my extended family thinks I am a little nuts. They always have thought I was nuts so thats nothing new. So far I have heard the following bad things about my move to Canada.
The taxes are too high
The medical system is terrible and you have to wait forever
Its too cold in the winter
You will miss the seasons ( they think its all winter )
Socialism is bad and from one relative I heard it referred to as Communism

What is funny is that I remember hearing all sorts of terrible things about Seattle when we told everyone we were coming up here to the PNW.

This blog posting is meant to help me document my families adventure and to provide helpful information to other people that maybe doing the same move or ponder doing so.

Some background on my family
I am from the West coast of the US. I grew up on the I80 corridor in Northern California. Then after I got married we moved to the Seattle area and have been up here for 11 years now. My mother in law lives 4 miles from our home and all of our extended family still live in the northern california area. I am a computer scientist. I have worked for the last 20 years in the tech industry and for myself in my own startups.
My wife has an environmental science degree and a teaching certification. She currently runs an online store where she sells her artwork. Given the demise of the education system she has been unable to land a full time teaching postion over the last 5 years. She grew up in northern california living also.

We have two kids. One is 10 and the other one is 8 years old. They have lived all of their lives in the Seattle area.

So we now have 18 days until the move. Let the count down begin.

I needed to get the clients TimeZone and alter the events listed in a calendar view to reflect the clients time zone.

Heres how I did it
On the Client side I used some javascript to get the clients offset to UTC in milliseconds.

1. A Beeramid is a work of art and takes way more skill than one would assume.  The more drunk you get the harder it is to build.  Yes, in battle mountain Nevada the most constructive use of your off time is trying to build the worlds biggest beeramid.  Its also the best way to waste time and stay out of the local jail for being a hippy.  BTW if you tip the cleaning staff they will leave your creation so you have time to finish it.
2. Shoot first then ask questions.  When your out in the middle of BM Nevada at your work campsite this is the correct rule to live by.
3. Jack rabbit truck bingo is not only a real game but can be a very fun use of your time.
4. If you ever find yourself working in the snow and have to stand there waiting for readings for an hour at a time DO NOT make your self an emergency survival blanket sleeping bag to keep warm in IF your working in the hills.  An emergency survival blanket sleeping bag is something I invented in Elko Nv.  You take two emergency survival blankets and duck tape them into a sleeping bag.  Here is the trick, once you get into the bag you can not kick yourself free and they are slippery and you WILL find yourself flying down the hill at top speed trapped inside.
5. Hills can block radio signals.  This is a very important lesson when you decide to try to get an all over tan while waiting for readings.  When your boss comes over the hill and finds you mostly naked reading a book its not a thing your going to be able to live down.  If you decide to get an all over tan BRING enough sun screen!
6. If you hear birds at sunset in the desert and shadows are starting to seem to move around you, RUN!  This is an especially important lesson if your scare of large spiders and its tarantula mating season and your standing in their mating grounds.  Also Mina NV is not a good place to go if you hate spiders, heck isn’t not a good place to go even if you do like spiders.
7. Pulling high voltage wires and building electrodes in the desert in a thunder storm is NEVER a good idea.  On the plus side is I now know the taste and smell of electricity.
8. If your boss is a di@k and degrades you constantly tell them to shove it in their glory hole but only do so once you have gotten back to town and their pay check has cleared the bank.  It is never a good idea to tell them off in the middle of the desert when they are armed and there are no witnesses.
9. Milford UT in Beaver county is a great place to work especially when the girl to guy ratio is 10 to 1 and your a teen age guy.  I highly recommend it!  One fun game to play is to try to date all non blonds which is tricky in UT.
10. When working on a uranium project if you ever pull wires into a creek bed and all of a sudden the knee high sage brush is now towering above your head upholster your gun.  Be on the look out for over sized desert rats (ugly scrappy jack rabbits) or anaconda sized rattle snakes.   Not that I saw any but I swear they are there some where.

Socialists generally share the view that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and derives its wealth through a system of exploitation. This in turn creates an unequal society, that fails to provide equal opportunities for everyone to maximise their potential, and does not utilise technology and resources to their maximum potential nor in the interests of the public.

For the record I feel that capitalism as a base for society is an evil concept.

The philosophy of socialism is not wrong at all but I would agree that a lot of the implementation examples have given the ideals a huge black eye and a really bad PR rap.

Just a thought I had today after a talk with a friend last night about socialism.

So for the record when I say socialism is not bad I am referring to social democracy and not the government in place in Cuba, China, the former USSR, etc

BTW  The United States is the only industrial nation that does not currently possess an official major social democratic party.
